Jones in 1857. The firm later became A.F. Towle \u0026amp; Son, and in 1882 Anthony Towle founded the Towle Manufacturing Company, which focused on producing sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and silver-plated wares on a larger industrial scale. By 1883, Towle had moved into a large brick factory on Merrimac Street in Newburyport. The company became one of the city's largest employers and helped establish Newburyport as a major center of American silver manufacturing. Over the decades, the factory expanded several times to keep up with demand.
