Minor ink fading from age, this note is 106 years old this year! It is rarer to find a note of this issue in such well-preserved condition, making it a must have for any collector! P#86b (Pick Number 86b).

As German forces occupied Belgium during World War 1, the countries National Bank, who had previously authorized all issuing of banknotes, had fled to London with all of their supplies, preventing Germany from printing banknotes under their institution. Instead, German forces took over the largest private bank of Belgium at the time, the Societe Generale de Belgique, issuing paper currency under their authority. This means that this bank note was issued under German Occupation and a direct result of this fascinating time in history! After Belgium regained their independence from German forces, the National Bank took over the issuance of paper currency again, abolishing the Societe Generale issuing authority.

This well-preserved, rarer note with its stunning designs and fascinating history would make for an excellent addition to any collection!

Thanks for stopping by!

1918 Belgian 1 Franc Small Bank Note - Mauve Ink, 19-10-18 - German Occupation WWI - 1918 Societe Generale One Franc Een Franc Note - P#86b

1943 National Bank of Belgium 10 Francs / 2 Belgas Note- WWII Era Note - 1943 Banque Nationale de Belgique Ten Francs/Two Belgas Note- P#122

This listing is for the photographed 1943 10 Francs/2 Belgas National Bank of Belgium Note. Its creation came as a merger between two older institutions: the Banco de Lisboa and the Companhia Confiança Nacional. Initially, it functioned as a private commercial bank with the authority to issue banknotes and manage Portugal’s currency system. By the mid-19th century, Portugal was struggling with financial instability, which led to a lack of confidence in multiple currency issuers. In response, the state sought to centralize control of the money supply. In 1887, the government granted the Banco de Portugal the exclusive right to issue banknotes across the entire country. In 1911 the national currency switched from the Reis to the Escudo, changing the banknotes in the process. It was established after King Michael I was forced to abdicate on December 30, 1947, and the monarchy was abolished. Romania then became a people's republic, aligning itself with the Eastern Bloc under Soviet influence. The regime, led initially by the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) and later by Nicolae Ceaușescu, implemented strict authoritarian control over the economy, media, and society.

In the early years of the republic, banknotes were issued by the National Bank of Romania (Banca Națională a României - BNR) and featured themes aligned with socialist propaganda, including workers, peasants, and industrial imagery. During the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu (from 1965 to 1989), Romanian currency continued to reflect socialist values. Paper money issued in this period often depicted images of industrial development, socialist leaders, and the accomplishments of the communist regime. Ceaușescu's cult of personality also began to emerge in later designs. The National Bank remained under strict government control, and all currency featured designs emphasizing the socialist state’s strength. In December 1989, Romania's socialist regime collapsed during the Romanian Revolution, which ended with the execution of Ceaușescu. The transition to a market economy eventually led to further currency reforms, including redenomination in the early 2000s, where the "new leu" (RON) replaced the older leu.

This note portrays the incredibly interesting economic history of Romania while a Socialist Republic, making it a must have for any collection!

Thanks for stopping by!

1966 Socialist Republic of Romania 10 Lei Note - Choice of Grade/Condition - Wide Serial Number Type - 1966 Romania Ten Lei Banknote - P#94

1943 Dutch East Indies Half Gulden Banknote - 1943 Muntbiljet Issue - Netherlands Indies WWII Occupation 50 Cent Gulden Note 1943 - P#110a

This listing is for the photographed 1943 Netherland Half Gulden Banknote. After Germany invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, the country quickly fell under Nazi control. The Nazis imposed strict economic controls, directing the Dutch economy to serve German war needs. Severe food shortages caused widespread famine, particularly in the cities, leading to the deaths of around 20,000 people.

During the occupation, German authorities had issued large amounts of currency, leading to inflation and economic instability. After the war, the Dutch economy was in ruins. Infrastructure was heavily damaged, and industries had been stripped of their resources. Immediately after liberation, in mid-1945, the Dutch government decided to replace the old currency with newly printed banknotes, known as "Noodgeld." These new banknotes were designed to replace the old, occupation-era notes that had been tainted by inflation and oversupply. People were required to exchange their old banknotes at local banks or financial institutions for newly issued notes. The exchange process was strict, with citizens only allowed to exchange a limited amount of money per person or household in order to prevent rampant inflation moving forward. The emergency notes were used for a short period while the government worked on printing a new, permanent series of banknotes.
