This postal cover was issued on the launch day of the USS Tambor, December 20th, 1939, during the Second World War. Postmarked in Groton, Connecticut, where the submarine was launched. The cachet on the left end of the naval cover was designed by Walton Dewolfe, and the cover was produced by the Electric Boat Company. The cachet features Santa Claus holding a ship steering wheel with a depiction of the USS Tambor and the Tambor fish in the water. Tambor had its keel laid in Groton, Connecticut, on January 16th, 1939. It was first launched on December 20th of that year, and first commissioned for official naval patrol on June 3rd, 1940. She was the leading ship of her class, serving 12 intense war patrols in the Pacific during World War II, earning a total of 11 battle stars during the war. When the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred, the U.S.S Tambor was stationed for a peace time patrol of Wake Island, a short distance away from the attack. Throughout the war she was stationed primarily in and around Pearl Harbor and the surrounding islands for war time patrols. She played an important role in the Battle of Midway in June of 1942, as her presence triggered an emergency turn by a Japanese cruiser which caused the crash of two Japanese warships. She was credited with multiple enemy ship sinkings by the end of WW2. After her 12th war patrol she was retired from combat, docking at Pearl Harbor on November 30th, 1944, and was decommissioned on December 10th, 1945, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire.
