This listing is for the 1892 Duke of Clarence & Avondale Memoriam Medal. He died on January 14, 1892, from pneumonia, which he developed after contracting influenza. He passed away at Sandringham House in Norfolk during the global influenza pandemic of 1889–1892, just six days after his 28th birthday. His sudden death sent the British public into shock and profound mourning. Because the Duke was second in line to the throne (behind his father) and recently engaged, his passing drastically altered the royal succession. His younger brother, Prince George, subsequently moved up in the line of succession, took the title of Duke of York, and ultimately married the Duke of Clarence's fiancée, Princess Mary of Teck (later becoming King George V and Queen Mary).
