This listing is for the 2013 Casascius Precious Metal Bitcoin by Mike Caldwell. Casascius Bitcoins are physical bitcoins that you can hold, and each does or did hold real digital bitcoins. This specific Casascius bitcoin has already been redeemed and no longer has a bitcoin digital value. The private key was stored on the reverse of this coin in the small circular divot seen in the second photograph. Mike Caldwell created the private keys by having a small piece of paper inside a washer with a tamper-evident hologram on each side. However, he found it was more economical to have real coins minted with a hologram on one side instead of two different designs. His first round of coins made were custom brass coins ordered from a mint that specialized in car wash tokens. As of November 2013, the sales of bitcoins containing real digital currency were suspended. The treasury department informed him that minting a bitcoin qualified him as a money transmitter business and he was not officially registered as one and therefore was contacted by The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to either get a state license or halt production and he decided to spot their production, although this coin no longer has bitcoin value it has a unique backstory and collectors value!!!
