These heart-shaped Luckenbooth brooches originated in Scotland in the 16th century. The name derives from the Scottish words for "locked" and "brooch", as these pins were originally sold in locked booths on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Often given as gifts representing love and loyalty, these brooches were often gifted during weddings. Overtime as these Luckenbooth brooches became more popular, designs began becoming more elaborate and varied by maker. One legend says that Mary Queen of Scots gave a Luckenbooth pin to Lord Darnley on their wedding day as a symbol of love. Another says that Mary's first husband, Francis II of France, gifted her a Luckenbooth brooch as an engangement gift. This beautiful brooch provides an extremely interesting look into Scottish history and legend, making it a great gift!
