1886 1 Dollar Silver Certificate Martha Washington Note - Good (G), Torn - First Issue - Rare 1886 One Dollar Washington Note - Fr.215
This listing is for the photographed 1886 US 1 Dollar Silver Certificate, Martha Washington Issue. Rare note, signed by Rosecrans and Jordan, 1886 issue. Rare first issue type! Obverse shows a portrait of First Lady Martha Washington on the left end; this note was the first US banknote to depict a real woman. Blue printed serial numbers and red printed seal on obverse. Good (G) grade / condition, very circulated note, torn in three pieces, very fragile condition. Very rare note, excellent addition to any collection! Fr#215 (Friedburg Number 215).
The Martha Washington Silver Certificate notes are some of the most notable U.S. currency, as they are the only U.S. banknotes to feature a real woman as the main portrait. The first U.S. banknote to feature a real historical woman, not in a portrait, was the 1863 First Charter $20 National Bank notes which featured Pocahontas on the reverse. The certificates were first printed in 1886, six years after the first legal tender dollar bill featuring Washington was issued, a slightly re-designed Martha Washington also was produced in 1891. The portrait featured on the currency is based on Charles François Jalabert's portrait of Martha Washington. Super cool piece of history!
