This listing is for Sacagawea Dollars 2000-2008 Native American Archive Quality $1 Series Full Set. The Sacagawea dollar coin was introduced in 2000 primarily to replace the poorly received Susan B. Anthony dollar and save taxpayer money by producing more durable coinage than paper bills. The previous dollar coin was easily confused with the quarter, so the U.S. Mint gave the new coin a distinctive golden color and a smooth edge to differentiate it from the quarter. Beyond practical reasons, the coin was designed to honor Sacagawea, the Shoshone guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition, making it the first circulating U.S. coin to feature an actual Native American person. While it never fully replaced the paper dollar in everyday transactions, the coin is important for its cultural recognition of Indigenous history and for introducing a unique manganese-brass alloy to U.S. currency, which laid the groundwork for the ongoing Native American $1 Coin Program that continues today. Interesting Find!!!
