This listing is for the photographed 1849 Claremont Bank 5 Dollar NH Obsolete Contemporary Counterfeit Note. Issued July 4th, 1849. The note is a contemporary counterfeit, meaning it was reproduced during the notes period of use, as identified by the stamped "Bad" on the left side of the note. Center vignette of a perched bald eagle on an anchor with ships in the background. Beautiful clear designs! Very Fine (VF) grade/condition, some stains and other visible signs of circulation. We are based in New Hampshire and are always looking for any NH items with historical significance. So we were very excited to find this one!

The Claremont Bank was chartered by the New Hampshire legislature in 1846. The first president of this bank, George Baxter Upham was also a former New Hampshire congressman. Throughout the banks operation several counterfeit operations were conducted with their banknotes, resulting in a large number of these contemporary counterfeit notes being identified and stamped as such by the bank if they were used. One of the most famous counterfeit schemes involving this bank's banknotes occurred in October of 1851. The Bank was succeeded by the Claremont National Bank in 1864 due to initiatives from the Federal government to cease the production of locally produced banknotes. Incredibly interesting piece of local New Hampshire economic history!
