This listing is for the photographed 1897 Dominion of Canada 2 Dollar Large Note. This note has a printed issue date of July 2nd, 1897. Signed by Minister of Finance Courtney. Series C. Dark Brown reverse design. The obverse of this note features a portrait of Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later became Kind Edward VII) in military uniform at the left, and six fisherman in a boat at the center. The reverse of this note shows a haymaking scene with two men in the foreground and a man leading a cart in the background. Fine (F) grade/condition, many visible folds and other signs of circulation, as pictured. DC-14b (Dominion of Canada #14b). P#24Ca (Pick Number 24Ca). The Dominion of Canada was established on July 1st, 1867, bringing together three of the British North American Providences; The Providence of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The Dominion issued their first issue of paper currency notes in 1870 in the denominations 25 cents, $1, $2, $500, and $1,000. In 1872 they added $50 and $100 varieties. Most of the banknote production focused on smaller denominations that saw more everyday circulation, with a $4 denomination being added in 1882 and $5 in 1912. The last of the fractional 25 cents notes, known as "Shinplasters" for their small size, were issued in 1923. All issuance of notes by the Dominion of Canada ceased in 1935 when the Bank of Canada became the sole issuer of Canadian national currency.
