INRI, commonly seen on crucifixes, stands for the Latin phrase "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum," which translates to "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". This inscription, placed on the cross by Pontius Pilate, was a Roman custom of indicating the crime for which the condemned was being crucified. To open the the crucifix, simply twist the piece on the bottom of the item left until the back of the crucifix is able to open.
