INRI, commonly seen on crucifixes, stands for the Latin phrase "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum," which translates to "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". This inscription, placed on the cross by Pontius Pilate, was a Roman custom of indicating the crime for which the condemned was being crucified.
