These coins are especially interesting because 1958 was an important year in Haitian history. François Duvalier won the presidency in 1957. He initially came to power through an election, but his government quickly became increasingly authoritarian. By 1958, he was consolidating control over the Haitian government and security forces. U.S. diplomatic records from the period describe Haiti as facing severe economic problems while Duvalier was building a highly centralized political system.  Duvalier eventually declared himself President for Life in 1964, and he remained in power until his death in 1971. The 1958 coins therefore come from the very beginning of the Duvalier era. His portrait continued to appear on Haitian 5- and 10-centimes coins through 1970.
