This listing is for the photographed 1896 US 1 Dollar Educational Silver Certificate. Issued under the act of August 4th, 1886. Signed by Bruce and Roberts, differentiating the note from other similar issues. Beautiful rare note and a perfect addition to any collection! Fr.225 (Friedburg Number 225).

These notes are highly sought after because of their outstanding engravings and design. The obverse of this note displays a border with the names of the founding fathers and other prominent figures in American history inside of wreaths. The center vignette of this note is titled "History Instructing Youth" and portrays an allegorical representation of History with a young boy and pointing to the United States Constitution. In the background of the obverse scene is Washington D.C., with the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol visible. The reverse side of this note is printed in green and shows a portrait of both Martha and George Washington at the center surrounded by a stunningly engraved border. 

This type of Silver certificate was issued beginning in 1896. These Silver Certificates were part of a broader initiative to back currency with silver reserves, allowing the holder to redeem the note for $1 worth of silver. The "Educational" series, as they became known, included $1, $2, and $5 denominations, each with their own respective allegorical artwork. 

The 1896 series replaced the earlier "Ornate Back" Silver Certificates and was eventually succeeded by the 1899 series, which featured a new design with a portrait of Black Eagle and more traditional U.S. currency aesthetics.
