This listing is for the photographed 1945 Banco Nacional Ultramarino Portuguese Mozambique 5 Escudos Colonial Banknote. Issued on November 29th, 1945, in Lisbon. Issued by the Portuguese Banco Nacional Ultramarino, which issued currency in Portugal to be used in their colonies, including their colony of Mocambique, as identified by the text on this note. Reverse of this note depicts a portrait of Antonio Ennes on the left end, the Portugal coat of arms at the lower center, and the bank's steamship crest on the right end. The reverse of this note shows a woman sitting on an anchor watching sailing ships at the center, a representation of Portugal's naval prosperity. Very Good (VG) grade/condition, many folds and signs of circulation, as pictured. P#94 (Pick Number 94). This banknote is a rarer find and an excellent piece of Portuguese colonial history, making it a perfect addition to any collection!

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) was established by the Portuguese government in 1864 as a primary issuing bank for the country's overseas colonies, including the colony of Mozambique, located in southeastern Africa, which had been under Portuguese rule since the 16th century. By the early 20th century Portugal had begun a more direct governance of their colonies, which included the establishment of more financial and government institutions within their territories. BNU's first Mozambique banknote series was issued in 1914 using the escudos and centavos denominations, which replaced the older real-based Portuguese monetary system. These notes were printed in Lisbon and often featured allegorical imagery and representations of Portuguese imperial power, such as navigators, classical figures, and colonial emblems. The notes were issued in various denominations to facilitate both everyday transactions and larger commercial operations within the colony. While BNU remained the principal issuer of notes in Mozambique throughout most of the colonial period, its role diminished after the colony gained independence in 1975.
