This listing is for the photographed 1973 Greek 20 Drachmai Coin. The 1973 20 drachmai coin featuring the rising phoenix on one side and Athena on the other was introduced by the Greek military junta after the monarchy was abolished in June 1973. These coins, minted in copper-nickel, were part of a series that also included 5, 10, and other denominations. The phoenix design, representing the country's new status as the "Hellenic Republic", replaced the earlier coins featuring King Constantine II. The phoenix bird, a legendary creature in Greek mythology, is associatecd with cyclical regeneration and rebirth, often linked to the sun. It is believed to live for a very long time, eventually building a nest and setting itself on fire, from which a new phoenix emerges.
