This listing is for the photographed 1968 Republic of Biafra 1 Pound Note. This issue has its serial number printed on the obverse, differentiating it from other issues. Obverse shows a palm tree at the center of the note. The reverse of the note displays the country's coat of arms on the right end. Uncirculated (UNC) condition, no visible folds or tears, crisp note. P#5a (Pick Number 5a).
The Republic of Biafra was established in 1967 after the country seceded from Nigeria and gained their independence. The republic made up the majority of the former Eastern region of Nigeria and was inhabited by the Igbo (Ibo) people. Biafra ceased to exist only three years after its independence in January of 1970, becoming dependent on Nigeria once again.
Very cool uncirculated note from a country that only existed for 3 years!
