Ketari Tekakwitha was the first ever Catholic Saint to be Native American. She was a Mohawk woman who was the only survivor in her family from an epidemic of smallpox. Coming from a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother, she would join a Christian Indian Mission and would become known as "Lily of the Mohawks" during her time in the 17th century. She is the patroness of the environment and ecology.

The 8 American Martyrs were Jesuit Missionaries who taught Native Americans about Jesus Christ and were tortured and killed during their attempts in the 17th Century.
