During the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the economy of the nation and the practice of issuing banknotes was highly fragmented and decentralized due to the chaos of the political upheaval of the decade. Several different factions, or states, which were led by revolutionary leaders would issue their own currency to be circulated within their state, which lead to a chaotic and unstable monetary system within Mexico. The first banknotes of the Mexican Revolution were issued by the government of Francisco I. Madero in 1911.

In the State of Sonora (El Estado de Sonora), started the revolution circulating banknotes issued by the State of Chihuahua, which were first established by Madero in 1911. It wasn't until 1915, due to the popular practice of counterfeiting Chihuahua banknotes within the region, that the local government of Sonora decreed that they would issue their own banknotes. After this point, until the end of the Mexican Revolution period, the state would issue their own paper banknotes for circulation within their local economy.
