This listing is for the photographed 1942 Government of Ceylon 25 Cent Bank Note. Issued by the British authority in Ceylon on July 14th, 1942. These notes were introduced as a war time measure during WWII from the British Government under King George VI. This note has the prefix A/36, differentiating it from other issues. The obverse of this note displays a portrait of King George VI of England at the center. The reverse of this note is blank, with the exception of the notes serial number. Note is in great condition, with some ink bleeding and folds from circulation, as pictured. Beautiful note with a fascinating history, making it a must have for any collection! P#44a (Pick Number 44a).

The British Government established the colony of Ceylon in 1786. It lasted until 1948 with the Sri Lanka independence movement, where the country was then on known as Sri Lanka. While under British rule the monetary system of the Rupee was established, printing paper currency from 1885 onward. After the monetary crisis of 1884 on the island, British Ceylon enacted a paper currency ordinance which created a central currency authority and placed the Ceylon Rupee on par with their Indian counterpart. Although Ceylon gained its independence from Britian in 1948 the island remained under partial British control under the same name until 1957 when it officially unaligned itself with British authority and was renamed Sri Lanka.
