The Mt. Washington Cog Railway opened in 1869, becoming the world's first cog railroad. The founder of the railway, Sylvester Marsh, thought of the idea of a mountain-climbing railroad after he got lost climbing Mount Washington in 1857, and soon after began working towards the cog railways establishment. The railway brought riders over 6,000 ft to the summit of Mt. Washington, the highest peak in New England. The railway was an instant hit among tourists, with huge crowds of riders visiting the summit of Mt. Washington via the railway each year. The Mt. Washington Cog Railway still operates seasonally today and has become a staple of New Hampshire!
