Maximilian I of Mexico (1832–1867) was an Austrian archduke and younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Encouraged by Napoleon III of France, he took the throne amidst Mexican political turmoil but was executed by republican forces under Benito Juárez after French military support withdrew.
