This listing is for the photographed 1921 Kiel Autumn Week (Herbstwoche) 70, 80, and 90 Pfennig German Emergency Notgeld Set of 4. Issued by the Municipality of Kiel, Germany in the years following World War I to celebrate the local event "Autumn Week" or "Herbstwoche". Includes four notes that have varied reverse designs and denominations. The obverse of each of these notes shows a sailing ship at the center. Each of the reverse designs represents as aspect of the maritime history of the area, depicting famous events or figures. This set is not complete, as it is missing some notes from the series. Uncirculated (UNC) grade/condition, crisp notes! Excellent condition and an interesting piece of history!
Notgeld was a form of emergency currency that was issued by individual German municipalities or institutions immediately after the First World War when Germany was experiencing a severe economic depression. Most notgeld contained an expiry date, after which the note was deemed invalid. The issued notes of individual municipalities and institutions pulled power from the national Reichsbank and helped to counter currency shortages from the war. Printed using recycled materials, these notes became a popular collector's item because of their attractive colors and designs, leading to the overprinting of notes and eventually hyperinflation.
