This listing is for the photographed 1934 US 5 Dollar Federal Reserve San Francisco Issue Mule Note. Issued at the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco, L Seal. This is a rarer mule note, having a reverse check number of 939 or above (1364), adding to its value! Fine (F) grade/condition, visible folds and signs of circulation. Fr#1956-Lm (Friedburg Number 1959-Lm). Great rarer addition to any collection!

In an attempt to improve the readability of their banknotes, the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing transitioned from the micro plate numbers, measuring only .6mm high, to the macro plate numbers, which measure 1mmm, beginning in 1938. But, since the complete overhaul and replacement of plates was expensive, any remaining micro plates being used in production were used until exhausted, being printed simultaneously with macro plate sizes. The plates used on each batch of notes varied greatly during this transition period, which many times led to notes being printed with different sized check numbers on the reverse and obverse sides. Mule notes were created in every denomination until the micro plates were completely used up in 1953. These kinds of notes became known as mule notes and have become objects of great interest and collectability among banknote collectors today.
