This reprint differentiates from the original by having a letter prefix before the serial number, as the original does not. The obverse of the note depicts the flag of Samoa and its coat of arms on the right, and a kava bowl on the left. The reverse displays a print palm trees on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. Before Samoa gained independence from New Zealand in 1962, they used the pound as their national currency. In 1967 the independent Samoan government officially changed their national currency to the tālā. The original print of this note was one of the first printed issues after the nation gained independence. In 2020 the Western Samoa government authorized an official reprint of the 1963 5-pound note to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their independence and honor the nation's history.
