The 1924 Huguenot-Walloon Tercentenary Half Dollar is the only U.S. commemorative half dollar issued in 1924. It was struck to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of New Netherland (present-day New York) by Walloon and French Huguenot settlers in 1624. Congress authorized up to 300,000 coins, but only 142,080 were struck (including Assay Commission pieces). They were originally sold for $1 each, twice their face value, to raise funds for the anniversary celebration. Sales were disappointing, and many unsold coins ended up being released into circulation instead of being melted.
