The Ladies Home Journal was first published on February 16th, 1883, and soon became one of the leading women's magazines of the 20th century. In 1903 they became the first American magazine to reach 1 million subscribers. The magazine developed from a double-page supplement of the newspaper "Tribune & Farmer", which was titled "Women at Home". The supplement was written by the wife of the chief editor of the newspaper, Louisa Knapp Curtis. After a year of the supplement gaining popularity among readers it became an independent publication with Louisa Knapp Curtis as the editor. In the 20th century the magazine began including articles by famous social reformers such as Jane Addams. In December of 1909 the publication included the first appearance of the famous character "Kewpie" in a comic strip created by Rose O'Neill. During World War II the magazine was used by the Government to advertise to homemakers to support the war effort. The magazine has been used several times throughout the 20th century to reach out to women about social and political issues, becoming one of the most well-known publications in the United States. With the rise of television and the internet at the end of the 20th century circulation of The Ladies Home Journal declined significantly, the last publication of the magazine was in 2016.
