The Papiermark was the German currency from 4 August 1914 when the link between the Goldmark and gold was abandoned, due to the outbreak of World War I. In particular, the Papiermarks were the currency issued during the hyperinflation in Germany of 1922 and 1923. Darlehenskassenschein were banknotes issued between 1914 and 1922 by the Reich debt administration. They were in used until the hyperinflation of 1923 in Germany. These banknotes were not legal tender; however they had to be accepted by all public treasuries. Their value was guaranteed by loans on industrial and agricultural goods. Even without the status as legal tender Darlehenskassenschein were a de facto currency widely used as a parallel currency to the Goldmark during WWI and the beginning of the Weimar Republic.
This note is 111 years old this year.
