This was Kriegsnotgeld (war emergency money). During WWI, Germany experienced severe shortages of ordinary small-denomination coins because copper and other metals were needed for the war effort. Local governments therefore issued substitute money. The Bonn/Sieg districts issued 5- and 10-Pfennig emergency coins in 1917–1919. Contemporary records specifically state that the coins were intended to circulate in the areas of Bonn-Stadt, Bonn-Land, and Siegkreis, and that the reverse carried an image of the Rhine bridge.
