This listing features an Antique 1930s H. Walker & Co. "Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot" Whiskey Advertisement Postcard. This postcard was likely made shortly after the Prohibition on alcohol in the U.S. was lifted. The advertisement shows five different bottles of H. Walker & Sons Whiskey and Gin with the caption "Should Old Acquaintance be Forgot". The card also predominantly says that it was "not printed by the Liquor Commission". Perfect addition to any collection! Antique souvenir with an interesting history!
Hiram Walker and Sons Distillery was established in 1858 by Hiram Walker across the Detroit River in Ontario, Canada. The distillery mainly produced Canadian Whiskey throughout the 19th century, a liquor that became popular amongst soldiers in the Civil War as it could be kept longer than beer in war conditions. Walker established his own city, Walkerville, which was populated by distillery workers and their families. The Walker family owned and operated the distillery for three generations until 1926 when it was bought by Harry Hatch. During the prohibition era in the United States Canadian Whiskey, specifically from Walker's distillery, would be illegally smuggled across the Detroit River into the U.S. Detroit was the first major U.S. city to enforce prohibition in 1918 but saw the largest amount of illegal alcohol smuggling with over 75% of all illegal smuggling taking place in the city. Walkerville was forcibly amalgamated in 1935 with the neighboring city of Windsor. The distillery is still operating today, remaining one of the largest distilleries in North America with several branches throughout the US and Canada.
