The Best & Co. department store was founded by Albert Best in 1879, beginning by only selling infant and children's clothing, soon expanding to women's clothing and accessories as well. The store was first located on the "Ladies Mile", a prime shopping district in New York City for upper class women in the late 19th century. In 1908 the Best & Co. moved to 5th Ave and 35th Street, joining the elite group of stores that were located on 5th Avenue in the early 20th century. Fifth Ave is still known as a staple shopping district in New York City known for its high-end designer stores. The company was one of the first to establish their high-class stores in suburban areas, long before other competitors did the same thing, opening their branches in the 1920s and 1930s. Best & Co. liquidated in 1970 and closed all of their locations.
