This listing is for the photographed Set of 3 1921 Steyr Austria 10, 20, and 50 Heller Notgeld. This is a complete set of the notgeld issued in this series. They were issued in the Municipality of Steyr, Austria immediately following World War I as inflation raged through the defeated nation. Most other Austrian localities followed suit, resulting in many varied and specific Austrian "notgeld" from this time. Both the 10 and 50 Heller notes are Uncirculated (UNC) grade/condition, with no signs of circulation, while the 20 Heller note is in Extremely Fine (XF) grade/condition, having minor folds and other signs of circulation. Great find with an interesting history!
Emergency money printed in Germany and Austria immediately after WWI is widely known as "notgeld". The two countries experienced extreme periods of inflation and economic turmoil after their loss in WWI, resulting in municipalities, towns, and state-owned firms to issue their own emergency currencies. The notgeld would be issued with an expiration date, after which they would become invalid. These historically important souvenirs from the interwar periods are an interesting find, representing WWI history and Austria's economic downfall immediately after.
Well-preserved Austrian notgeld and fantastic pieces of history! Must have for any collection!
