The Republic of Italy (Repubblica Italiana) was established in 1946, replacing the Kingdom of Italy which had been the ruling power of the country previously. Although the lira had been Italy’s currency since the 19th century, the newly formed republic began issuing its own distinct Italian lira banknotes starting in the late 1940s. By the 1950s and 1960s, banknote production stabilized, and the republic introduced redesigned series that highlighted Italy’s national identity, celebrating cultural icons, artistic heritage, and scientific achievements. Notes during this era included portraits of figures such as Marco Polo, Maria Montessori, Michelangelo, and Galileo, becoming increasingly colorful and secure against counterfeiting. Technological improvements in printing and security features continued throughout the 1970s–1990s, culminating in the final series of lire notes issued before the adoption of the euro.
