Trinidad and Tobago became independent from Britain on August 31, 1962. Two years later, in 1964, the country introduced its own national currency, the Trinidad and Tobago dollar (TT dollar), replacing the earlier British West Indies dollar system. The first TT-dollar banknotes entered circulation in December 1964, while the new decimal coins began being distributed in 1966. By 1971, the country was still a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. That's why the coin carries the national coat of arms rather than a portrait of the Queen. It was issued under the reign of Elizabeth II, but the reverse focuses entirely on the denomination and country name.  The most interesting part is the coat of arms on the obverse. The shield contains three ships, which represent the ships used by Christopher Columbus during his voyages. Above the shield is a palm-tree crest, while the two birds are scarlet ibises and cocrico birds, important national symbols of Trinidad and Tobago.
