This listing is for the 1837 Hard Times Token Abraham Riker, New York, NY, Merchant Token. This Token is a fascinating artifact from New York City’s commercial history. Issued by a prominent boot and shoemaker at 131 Division St., these bronze tokens served as emergency "small change" during the economic depression of the late 1830s when federal coinage was scarce. The obverse features a charming illustration of a slipper, boot, and shoe, which acted as a visual advertisement for Riker's storefront. Interesting Find!
