The Ejercito Constitutionalista was founded in 1913 after the assassination of President Francisco I. Madero by Victoriano Huerta who took power in Mexico. The group was founded by Venustiano Carranza and consisted of mostly intellectuals, middle-class urbanites, and liberals who sought to establish a democratic constitution that would benefit all Mexicans. They were aided by the United States due to their advocacy for a democratic government. They defeated the Mexican Federal Army under Huerta in 1914 and crafted the Mexican Constitution of 1917, which is still in place today. The group issued banknotes like these during the revolution to fund their war efforts without relying on foreign loans. They were issued to people as promissory notes, which would be redeemed to their full value once the constitutional order was restored.
