During World War II, the British occupation of Malaya was interrupted by the Japanese invasion in 1941. Before the war, Malaya was under British colonial rule, with its economy heavily reliant on rubber and tin. The Japanese swiftly took over Malaya by early 1942, marking the beginning of the Japanese occupation until 1945.
Before the war, the British government, through the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya, issued banknotes for use across Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, and Brunei. These notes were widely trusted and backed by British financial stability.
During the Japanese occupation, British-issued banknotes were replaced by Japanese-issued currency, commonly referred to as "banana money" because of the banana tree motifs on the notes. These notes were not backed by precious metals or foreign reserves, leading to rampant inflation.
After Japan's surrender in 1945, British forces reoccupied Malaya under the British Military Administration (BMA). The BMA promptly issued temporary banknotes marked with "BMA" to restore financial order. These notes helped replace the worthless Japanese-issued currency and stabilize the economy.
