The site has become a pilgrimage for those who identify as LGBTQ+ because of the legend surrounding it. The story goes that around the year of 1250 AD, two male villagers were holding hands and kissing on their walk to the shrine. Enraged after seeing this, the villagers would attack and strip the men as well as tie them up to be left for dead. One of the men prayed to Mary, who, in her compassion freed the men, melted the snow, and sent them on their way to give word of the miracle. Since then the sanctuary has been a pilgrimage site for the LGBTQ+ and Catholics.
