Beautiful coin silver (.900) pastry server featuring ornate floral engravings covering the entire piece and made by Towle Silversmiths in Newburyport Massachusetts. Stamped on the back of the item is "Towle MFG.CO". Anthony Francis Towle apprenticed under the Moulton family before forming Towle & Jones with William P. Jones in 1857. The firm later became A.F. Towle & Son, and in 1882 Anthony Towle founded the Towle Manufacturing Company, which focused on producing sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and silver-plated wares on a larger industrial scale. By 1883, Towle had moved into a large brick factory on Merrimac Street in Newburyport. The company became one of the city's largest employers and helped establish Newburyport as a major center of American silver manufacturing.
