The Lincoln cent (sometimes called the Lincoln penny) has been struck by the United States Mint since 1909. The obverse or heads side was designed by Victor David Brenner, as was the original reverse, depicting two stalks of wheat (thus "wheat pennies", struck 1909–1958).
This 1938 Wheat penny is a fantastic piece of history (as they all are). The 29th year of production, the coin is a necessary addition to a collection, and makes a great gift.
What happened in 1938?
- Orson Welles's radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds is broadcast, causing mass panic in the eastern United States. The play was broadcast without commercials and was done in a style that emulated real breaking news reports, creating a realistic feeling to the drama. The reports chronicled an alien invasion of the Eastern United States.
- The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, later known as the March of Dimes, was founded on January 3rd.
- Germany -- Nuclear Fission Discovered
- The Great New England Hurricane began as a tropical cyclone near the Cape Verde Islands in early September.
- Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom sign the Munich Agreement on September 30th.
- Seabiscuit and War Admiral have their long awaited race to decide the best horse
- The popular comic superhero Superman makes his first appearance during April when Action Comics #1 is published (issue dated June 1938).
- Fair Labor Standards Act ( Wages and Hours Bill ) passes regulations "labor of persons under eighteen years of age"
- Italy wins the World Cup in France defeating Hungary
- A 450 metric ton meteorite struck the earth in an empty field near Chicora, Pennsylvania
Thanks for Stopping By!

I bought a few, especially since I'm overseas and postage costs can be extremely high, but the delivery fee was why I chose this seller - it wasn't exorbitant for a change! Given this alone, I'll be back! The coins were packed flat (letter style), encased in plastic covering and not touching each other to prevent damage during postage - despite being on the other side of the world, they arrived safely - and quickly! Thank you so much! Photo included is just an example of a couple of the coins from the order I received. HideReviewed ProductPosted on
