During World War II, the United States government manufactured roughly 1.5 million Purple Heart medals in anticipation of massive casualties from the planned invasion of mainland Japan. Because the invasion never took place, hundreds of thousands of these unengraved, pristine medals remained in official military storage warehouses for decades. This massive surplus was used to supply combat units and award wounded service members throughout the Korean and Vietnam wars. Featuring a beautiful, rich purple enamel heart insert wrapped in a gilded bronze border. The front showcases a crisp, raised profile relief of General George Washington, topped by the Washington family coat of arms. The reverse side features the raised inscription "For Military Merit" with a completely blank, unengraved panel. The medal is suspended from its authentic, original vibrant purple silk ribbon bordered by crisp white stripes. The fabric is taut, clean, and free of typical fraying or rot. The long, rectangular leatherette case is a classic early-to-mid 1940s design, featuring the distinctive gold-leaf wave border along the outer rim. The interior is lined with its original cream-colored velvet and satin inserts, complete with an upper elastic strap holder. Rare Find!!!
