In 1886 David H. McConnell was a traveling book salesman who would give a free bottle of perfume to customers with every book sold, but when he discovered that many women who bought his books were more interested in the perfumes, he founded the California Perfume Company, which would later become known as Avon. McConnell also realized that women liked to network with other women, so he began employing more women as Avon Ladies or representatives of the company. The first Avon Lady hired was Mrs. P. F. E. Albee, a woman from New Hampshire. Mrs. Albee travelled by horse and buggy and developed a woman-only network of selling perfume to other women.
In honor of Mrs. Albee the Avon company began giving out the annual Mrs. Albee Award, a 10" porcelain figurine featuring the likeness of the first Avon Lady, to members of the Presidents Club and highest-selling representatives in 1978. The figurines were given out each year until 2019 when the Mrs. Albee award was retired.
