Postal Money Orders were introduced by the U.S. Postal Service in 1864 as a way of sending small amounts of money through the mail, as coins and paper currency would commonly get stolen when travelling via postage. The orders would be purchased and sent through the buyers local Post Office and authorized at the location with a dated postal stamp. The purchaser's check is insured and protected through the purchaser's receipt, which is detached and given to the purchaser in case the money order is lost. Money orders continue to appeal to immigrants sending money abroad as well as those ordering goods by mail and internet businesses because of their security.
