Through the mid-twentieth century, they became the premier lock and key supplier for major American automakers, especially General Motors, with their distinctively stamped keys becoming an industry standard. While the company simultaneously grew into a global leader in small gasoline engines for lawnmowers and outdoor power equipment, they maintained their automotive lock division until the mid-1990s, when they spun it off into an independent company named Strattec Security Corporation to focus exclusively on power equipment.
