This listing is for the photographed 1823 Nova Scotia Half Penny Token. Relatively rare type of half penny token; only 400,000 minted.

The person pictured on the coin is King George IV. The reason it is called a half penny token is because the monetary system in Canada and the provinces went through many changes, and many periods of time of changing (and confusing) currencies. For example, the French controlled present day Canada before the British, and when the British took over, they did not issue official British currency for the territories. So banks, private merchants, etc. would also issue tokens that, while unofficial, were accepted as legal tender. There were many periods of time when there simply was not enough currency in circulation for trade, or planned tokens because they knew a shortage would develop over time with coins lost, destroyed, damaged, and hoarded.
Nova Scotia joined Canada in 1867.
