Harmon A. Sheldon was a prominent and successful dry goods merchant in the town of Middlebury, Vermont throughout the mid-19th century. His merchant career began in 1843 when he and another Middlebury merchant, George M. Brown, opened the store Brown & Sheldon located on Allen Block in downtown Middlebury. Brown retired in 1845, leaving Sheldon manage the store on his own, which he did successfully, becoming a prominent merchant within the town and surrounding area. In 1852 Sheldon moved his store to a new block downtown, and again to a brick building that he had commissioned himself in 1859. He continued to successfully operate his store until his death in 1870, after which the store was succeeded by his son's business, Sheldon & Co.
