The New Hampton Institution, or New Hampton School, was founded in 1821 as a co-educational secondary boarding school designed to better prepare students for college level courses and future careers. The campus was originally located beside the New Hampton town hall, but its original buildings were later moved to 'the village', a secluded section of town, in 1852. The schools secluded location was a primary marketing point used by the school, advertising that it kept students away from any temptations of wrongdoing, such as saloons or billiards. The school is associated with the Free-Will Baptists, even founding the Cobb Divinity School in partnership with the religion to teach theology to students. Along with the divinity school, the New Hampton Institution also founded the Commercial College and Bank in 1866, which was meant to focus on teaching students' business strategy, economics, and bookkeeping to prepare them for future careers. The Commercial College and Bank printed and distributed pieces of paper 'college currency' to students in order to teach them how to handle physical money during business transactions. The New Hampton Institution, now named the New Hampton School, still operates today.
