This listing is for the photographed 1977 Republic of Ireland 1 Pound Punt Gaelic First Issue Banknote. Issued on June 10th, 1977, the first date of issue for this series of banknotes, making this a rarer find! Signed by C.H. Murray and M. O'Murchu. The obverse of this note depicts a portrait of Queen Maeb on the right end with old Gaelic text under printed across the note. The reverse of the note shows an extract of Lebor na hUidre. The notes watermark is of Lady Lavery, a national symbol for the Republic. Very Fine (VF) grade/condition, some visible folds and signs of circulation. Great rarer note with an interesting history! Must have for any collection! P#70a (Pick Number 70a).

Lady Lavery banknotes were first issued in 1928 and circulated until they were replaced by the B Series notes starting in 1976. The figure of Lady Lavery was created to symbolize the Irish state, being adapted from a portrait of the Irishwoman Lady Hazel Lavery. Lady Lavery was prominently portrayed on the A Series of banknotes issued by the Central Bank of Ireland, and were replaced with B Series banknotes, with the 1 Pound note featuring Queen Maeb and being written entirely in Gaelic, starting in 1976. The first issue of these B Series notes was dated June 10th, 1977 (10.06.77). Although this new series featured a £100 note, this note was never put into circulation. Each denomination showcased a different figure from Irish history.
