The Directoire was the form of government used by the First French Republic, from October 26, 1795 to November 9, 1799. It took its name from the five Directors holding executive power. Set up by moderate republicans following the Thermidorian Convention, the bourgeois-inspired regime was marked by the re-establishment of censal suffrage to elect the two legislative chambers, the Conseil des Cinq-Cents and the Conseil des Anciens. Faced with misery and attempts at destabilization, the Directoire, accused of being a "bourgeois republic", reverted to revolutionary and police measures

In November 1799, it was overthrown by Napoleon Bonaparte in the Coup of 18 Brumaire and replaced by the Consulate. In mainstream historiography, the term Directoire is also used to refer to the period (i.e. from the dissolution of the National Convention on 26 October 1795 to Napoleon's coup d'état), coinciding with the final four years of the French Revolution
