This listing is for the photographed 1852 Hungarian Government-In-Exile 5 Forint Unissued Remainder Note. This note was printed in Philadelphia while Hungarian revolutionary leader Lajos Kossuth was in exile in the United States. This is an unissued remainder, meaning that there are no written dates or signatures on the note. The obverse of this note features the Hungarian coat of arms shields in the lower right and left corners, an allegorical woman holding a sickle representing Agriculture sat beside hay bundles and the number "5" on the left end, an allegorical woman holding a cadecus representing industry sat on barrels beside the number "5" on the right end, an arm holding a hammer at the center, and a beehive at the lower center of the note. Beautifully detailed designs! Almost Uncirculated (AU) grade/condition, little to no signs of circulation, some wear in the upper right corner, as pictured, crisp note! Excellent piece of history, great addition to any collection! Great rare remainder note! P#S143r (Pick Number S143r).

Following the failed Hungarian Revolution in 1848-49 led by Lajos Kossuth, the leader and his followers were exiled to the United States from 1851-52. Kossuth and his group commenced a grand tour of the country at this time, which brought major support for the Hungarian revolutionary cause from the anti-monarchical Americans they encountered. Kossuth and his Hungary government-in-exile established the Hungarian Fund during his time in the US to collect funds supporting a future Hungarian revolution attempt. "Exile notes" such as this one were printed and issued in Philadelphia and New York, acting as bonds that were intended to be redeemed for their value in Silver Forints following Hungary's independence. No further revolution ever did come to fruition under Kossuth and his followers in exile, likely due to Kossuth's rapidly declining popularity among Americans for his controversial animosity towards the issue of American Slavery.
