1851 Mexico Silver 1/4 Real - Quarto/Quartilla - Mexican 1/4 Real 1851 Silver Mexican Coin, 90% Silver

This listing is for the photographed 1851 Mexico Silver 1/4 Real. 

This tiny coin was struck during the Federal Republic of Mexico, when Mexico was still using the old real-based monetary system inherited from the Spanish colonial period. The ¼ real was worth one-quarter of a real and was intended for very small everyday transactions.  The 1851 version is particularly interesting because it is .903 fine silver, weighs only about 0.845 grams, and measures roughly 12 mm. It was actually the smallest silver denomination Mexico had minted up to that point. The design shows a bust of Liberty on the obverse, representing the Mexican republic rather than a monarch. The reverse has 1/4 surrounded by REPUBLICA MEXICANA, with the date below.
